Linear codes over finite fields

We will give an overview of the basic notions and functions of 
interest in the theory of linear error- correcting codes over finite
fields, with some examples of important classes of such codes.  We then
discuss some aspects of the interface that exists between algebraic curves
over finite fields (viz. geometric Goppa codes), exponential sums over
finite fields (eg. Gauss sums), and linear codes over finite fields.
