Sparse signal estimation for neuroscience

Research Group

Sridharan Devarajan and Chandra Murthy

Centre for Neuro Sciences, IISc and Department of Electrical Communication Engineering, IISc

The brain is among the most complex of biological systems, with the billions of neurons and trillions of connections among these neurons. Despite this rich machinery, the brain encodes the sensory world sparsely [1]. In this project we will utilize data obtained from neuroimaging techniques (functional MRI and electroencephalography) that permit recording the activity of large ensembles and networks of neurons. We will seek to use sparse signal estimation approaches to identify activity and connectivity in brain regions and networks based on sparse coding principles.
