Chairman's message

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Science. Our department is a vibrant hub of discovery, where faculty members, students, post-doctoral fellows and (short and long term) visitors work together to explore the beauty and power of mathematics — from its purest forms to its applications across science and technology. The department regularly hosts seminars, workshops, and conferences, creating an environment where ideas are exchanged and collaborations flourish.

We take pride not only in advancing the frontiers of knowledge but also in nurturing the next generation of mathematicians. Our programs are designed to challenge, inspire, and equip students with the tools to think critically, creatively, and rigorously.

I invite you to explore our community and join us in celebrating the excitement of mathematical inquiry.

Research

The department is active in research in most areas of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra and number theory, analysis, discrete mathematics, geometry/topology, mathematical finance, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, representation theory, and time-series analysis.

Teaching

The department has a Ph.D. programme as well as an integrated Ph.D. programme. The department participates in the undergraduate programme of IISc: undergraduate students can opt for mathematics as a major or a minor.
